Message to The Conference to Commemorate the 40th Martyrdom of Comrade Ibrahim Kaipakkaya

Dear comrades,

Though we are not able participate, our minds and hearts are with you on this historic occasion of commemorating the 40th martyrdom of the great Maoist leader comrade Ibrahim Kaipakkaya.

Comrade Kaipakkaya was one of the pioneer leaders of the Maoist movement that emerged throughout the world in the 1960s and early 1970s. The Great Debate against Krushchev revisionism led by Mao Tsetung, the Cultural Revolution and the incessant striving of the communists in different countries to take the road of revolution were the powerful sources of this revolutionary upsurge.

In Turkey, Kaipakkaya led the struggle to expose and break away from the Shafak revisionists who were sinisterly promoting their economism as the path of Mao Tsetung in order to stamp out the flames of Maoist rebellion. He was the founder leader of the Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist-Leninist formed in 1972. Presenting an exemplary model of linking words with deeds he went on to initiate the people’s war in Turkey.

In a creative application of ideology Kaipakkaya took up the task of demolishing the Kemalist myth of independence that was promoted by the Turkish ruling classes to legitimise their state. He exposed the comprador content and mission of Mustapha Kemal’s modernising project. Furthermore, he led the Maoists to take a correct stand on the national oppression within Turkey and upheld the right of the Kurdish nation to self-determination including its right to secede. This was a heavy blow against the national chauvinism promoted by the Turkish state.

Comrade Kaypakkaya was assassinated while in the custody of the reactionary Turkish regime. At the time of his death he was only 24 years old.  His death was a serious loss to the proletariat in Turkey and to the international communist movement. They were deprived of a leader and teacher who was making important contributions in practice as well as theory to the proletarian revolution. This can be felt all the more keenly in the present situation of global crisis which holds rich potential for revolutionary advance.

The most productive period of Ibrahim Kaipakkaya’s work took place amidst a worldwide revolutionary upsurge. Pointing to the absence of such an upsurge in the present situation there are some who question the capacity of Marxsim-Leninism-Maoism to guide the world revolution. But the fact is that the oppressed and exploited throughout the world have risen up in rebellion repeatedly. The Arab Spring, Occupy movement and countless other struggles waged by the proletariat and other exploited against the attempts made by imperialism and reaction to put all the burden of the global crisis on their shoulders are some striking examples. Ongoing people’s wars, such as those in India and the Philippines, stand out as reference points and strategic anchors. A potential new wave of revolution is emerging. The Maoists must unite, intensify their efforts to provide leadership and strengthen their international unity. They must build broad unity with all anti-imperialist forces to ensure the destruction of imperialism and reaction. As a class conscious mass forum we reiterate our support to this great task.

On this occasion of commemorating comrade Ibrahim Kaipakkaya we learn from his ideological steadfastness and unflinching commitment to the revolutionary cause of the people. We wish all success to this Conference and look forward to learning from its deliberations.

Lal Salam,
